United Way of the Wine Country has been dedicated to improving lives locally for 50 years. Everyone deserves a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, income that can support a family through retirement, and good health. To create lasting change, United Way focuses on solving the underlying causes of common problems related to education, income and health. We are committed to achieving lasting solutions - not just quick fixes - for our entire community.
Last year, more than 227 volunteers helped prepare over 6,600 tax returns and returned $9 million in total refunds to local residents. This money was returned to the pockets of residents and put back into the local economy, or saved. We need your help to reach even more clients in 2018!
Join our exciting coalition of volunteers and we will provide training and link you to a local site in your community! We have over 30 sites throughout our 5-county region to choose from (Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake, Humboldt and Del Norte.)

All of our Tax Preparers must be trained and certified by the IRS. Training class schedules vary by county and are offered in December and January. On average, three full days or 6 evening sessions of classroom instruction is offered. For tax professionals or experienced volunteers, an online training tool is available starting in November.
PLEASE NOTE: You must RSVP for all trainings you’ll find on the link below. Space is limited, so they are not drop in. Your RSVP enables us to contact you with details and in the event of any changes.
Site operation hours vary by site, but each volunteer is asked to commit regularly (at least a 4-hour shift per week), beginning late January through April!
All of our Tax Preparer volunteers need to be comfortable working with a computer.
No, though a liking for numbers and analysis does help. We have excellent instructors who will teach you how to help clients file their taxes.
The in-class Tax Preparer training is highly recommended for new volunteers. During this training you not only learn tax law but also Tax Slayer, the IRS computer software we use to file taxes. The in-class setting is the ideal setting to ask questions and also to learn more about the program.
The self-paced online training covers tax law and is highly recommended for returning volunteers who are already familiar with the Tax Slayer computer software and the program. However, due to some volunteers’ schedules, self paced online training may be the only feasible option and in that case, support is also offered from our trainers to help guide more inexperienced through the online option if they have a question.
