United Way of the Wine Country has been dedicated to improving lives locally for 50 years. Everyone deserves a good life: a quality education that leads to a stable job, income that can support a family through retirement, and good health. To create lasting change, United Way focuses on solving the underlying causes of common problems related to education, income and health. We are committed to achieving lasting solutions - not just quick fixes - for our entire community.
For a young single mother, savings counseling and a refund of more than $3,000 can create a path towards financial stability. Adriana (featured above) is a youth member of the Conservation Corps North Bay (CCNB) working as part of the CCNB recycling crew. She recently received free tax preparation from United Way’s Earn It! Keep It! $ave It! program which hosted an ad hoc tax event at CCNB.
With a three year old daughter at home, Adriana was thankful to have her taxes filed seamlessly and learn that she would receive a large refund including both the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the California EITC. This refund will allow her to purchase needed necessities for her and her daughter. She also plans to open a bank account and savings account for the first time, thanks to savings counseling provided by Redwood Credit Union.
Adriana was previously unbanked but now plans to set up direct deposit with CCNB and save 30% – 50% of her refund. In the past, Adriana went to Walmart to cash her checks from work and had no other banking vehicle to help her organize her finances. She said her refund will also help her begin to save for a new house for her and her daughter. As Adriana’s daughter is about to start preschool, her tax refund is the start to a brighter and more financially stable future.
